General Appearance

- In this the examiner notes the age, caste, gender, education, family, civic status and overall information of the person. These characteristics are important because poor personal hygiene or grooming can reflect a lack of interest in self-care or a physical inability to bathe or groom oneself.

  • A mental status exam may also be given frequently to monitor or document changes in the patient's condition.

Normal result

 Normal results of a mental status test depend to some extent on the patient's history, level of education, and recent life events. For example, a depressed mood is appropriate in the context of a recent death or other tragic event in the patient's family but inappropriate in the context of a recent salary increase.
